Hotel Review: Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District

As a quick vacation, we’re heading to San Diego. We’re staying at the Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District and it ended up being a great hotel for our stay. I’ve reviewed several Moxy hotels, both in the US and in Europe, so I mostly know what to expect from the Marriott Moxy brand. The San Diego Gaslamp Moxy was no different. The rooms are small but functional, the lobby is displayed as a public living space with a book room, board games, and a bar.

The Moxy San Diego Gaslamp is a good choice for solo or couple travelers. It’s also a nice spot for walking around San Diego’s Gaslamp quarter, just note that on the weekends this area is busy and can be a little loud. That’s part of the appeal though, the Moxy San Diego Gaslamp is perfect for enjoying some of the night life in the area. It’s also a nice walk down to the water and the activities there. I liked the Moxy San Diego Gaslamp and would happily stay here again.

Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Location

The Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Downtown is located right on Sixth Ave between E and F street. This is a perfect location in the Gaslamp Quarter for exploring. We walked to great bars and restaurants as well as the water front. There’s also plenty of transit links if you want to take the bus out to the zoo.

When arriving, just look for the distinctive purple glow from the Moxy sign.

Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Check-In and Lobby

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Lobby

The lobby here at the Moxy Gaslamp is classic Moxy. There are board games along with lots of seating so you can relax here in the evenings with a drink or in the mornings with breakfast. They also have a full kitchen open most regular hours.

Towards the back of the lobby are more games and the reading area upstairs. During the day time it’s a quiet area to relax and read a book, at night it’s closed off as this becomes more of a bar.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Coffee

There’s a coffee area in the lobby too, this seemed to be out at all hours.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District bar

Check-in is done here at the bar. There’s not really a front desk, the bar at the Moxy Gaslamp is the main point of contact. I like that, no need to waste space with a desk. We got our room keys and headed up towards the room.

Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Queen Room Review

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Queen Room

We walked into our room here at the Moxy Gaslamp. While not exactly the same as every other Moxy, they are certainly related.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Queen Room

We had a Queen bed. I really liked the bed and pillows. Both sides of the bed have a night stand with power outlets. There are also reading lights for each side too.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Room Review

Across from the bed is the TV, there’s very little furniture here at the Moxy Gaslamp, small rooms just don’t allow for it.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Room Desk

Because of the small space this is the desk. It just folds down from the wall. Fortunately this is a vacation trip and I don’t need to do any real work. But I will say, it would be nice if there was an outlet in or near the desk. Not having a place to plug in my computer was a little annoying.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Room Chair

Next to the window was a chair. I mostly used it as a luggage rack.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Hooks Wall

Moxy hotel rooms almost always have these hooks. I really like them instead of a closet.

Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Bathroom Review

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Bathroom Review

The bathroom here at the Moxy Gaslamp is not large, but it was very clean and well stocked.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Bathroom

I like all of the tile work here in the shower. This bathroom is separated from the rest of the room with a pocked door. Not an issue for us, but kids with small hands or people with mobility issues might struggle a little bit. Just something to keep in mind.

Our room faced into an interior atrium. Not a great view of anything in particular but it wasn’t loud at night so that’s nice.

Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Public Area and Bar

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Public Area

At nights the upstairs reading area was closed as the lobby transitions into a bar. This area was a nice spot for games and relaxing.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Floor

This being San Diego, there is a very slight navy theme to the hotel. Nothing outlandish, just little things like the font used here for the floor level signage.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Room Numbers

I also liked the room numbers. I thought this was very clever to use lights and shadow to mark each room. Though if they were really cleaver, they would have cut the outline smaller at the bottom than top to account for the slightly different shadow length.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Free Drinks

When we checked in here at the Moxy Sand Diego Gaslamp we were given drink vouchers that are good for one drink per person.

Moxy San Diego Downtown Gaslamp District Bar Drinks

We got one of each drink type offered. I had a beer and Val the “got moxy” cocktail. Both were fine, there’s definitely better local beers in the area.

Moxy San Diego Gaslamp Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed our stay here at the Gaslamp Quarter Moxy. The hotel was quite, comfortable, and clean. The location is also perfect for exploring the area while on a quick vacation. The nightlife was fun and we could walk to everything. There’s also a plethora of great restaurants, breweries, and cafes in the area so you’ll never go hunger or thirsty.

I would gladly return to the Moxy San Diego Gaslamp.
