Flight Review: Delta CRJ900 First Class. EWR-CVG

Let’s get back to kinda boring flight reviews. Today I’m riding on and reviewing the Delta CRJ900 in First Class from Newark to Cincinnati. This isn’t a route that I would usually travel, but I had early week meetings in New Jersey and later week meetings in Ohio so here I am. I’ve reviewed the Delta CRJ900 a few times, but it’s been more than a year so I figured I’d do a full review and update.

Bottom Line: I like the Delta CRJ900. In First Class it’s a solid product for flights of less than 2 hours. There’s in seat power for every seat and wifi, but the Delta CRJ900 doesn’t have in-seat entertainment.

EWR Airport and Boarding

EWR Airport Security

I arrived at EWR Terminal A about 90 minutes before my flight. The new terminal has Euro style automatic gates to admit people to the correct line for security. I used Pre-check as there was no line and Clear has become mostly useless these days.

EWR Airport Security

After passing security I headed downstairs and checked out the brand new EWR Delta Skyclub(Full Review Here).

EWR Airport Delta Boarding

It was soon boarding time and I walked down to the gate. Again the gates here use Euro style self boarding gates. I like these, they seem more orderly than the regular boarding process.

EWR Airport Delta Boarding

We’re boarding right on-time here at EWR. I’m traveling with just a backpack so I don’t need to leave my luggage plane side.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Seats

I found my seat in the bulk head on the right hand side of the plane. First Class on the Delta CRJ900 is in a 2-1 configuration. I’d rather sit on the single side of the plane, but all of those seats were taken.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Seat Bulkhead Legroom

The bulkhead on the CRJ900 has lots of space, but I do still prefer to sit in one of the other rows. Unfortunately those didn’t have any window seats so I’m in the front row. The leg room is fantastic and the seats are pretty comfortable.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Baggage

The overhead bin was full when I arrived and the flight attendant put my bag into the closet for me. That’s the issue with the bulk head, no under seat storage.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Seat Features

Delta CRJ900 First Class Seat Power

The Delta CRJ900 has power in each seat. In First Class, the power is in the center arm rest.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Seat comfort

The seats also recline. That’s pretty much the end of the seat features. The CRJ900 is still a regional jet, there’s not too much to expect.

Delta CRJ900 Departure

While here at the gate the flight attendant did the safety briefing and we then pushed back. The pilots told us it would be just about 85 minutes in flight down to CVG.

Delta CRJ900 EWR Takeoff Window View

We didn’t wait long for our takeoff spot. It’s a perfectly clear day.

On takeoff we got a great view of Newark below.

Because I’m sitting on the right side of the plane, we also got a great view of NYC as we headed out of the area.

Here in the North East it’s a great clear day for flying. Very few if any bumps as we turned South West towards CVG.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Snacks and Drinks

About 20 minutes into the flight, the flight attendant came around and offered drinks. I decided to have a Sweetwater IPA. I brought the bagel along from a shop next to my hotel(Hampton Inn Fairfield NJ Review Here).

Delta CRJ900 Three Mile Island

Outside we passed over 3 mile island. It’s fun seeing landmarks from the air.

Delta CRJ900 Drinks and Snacks

Next there was a pass at the snack basket. Since I had lunch already I just went for desert with these chocolate shortbread cookies. I love these dark chocolate and sea salt ones.

The flight from EWR-CVG isn’t very long, we only spent about 35 minutes with the seat belt sign off as we passed over.

And soon enough the sign was turned back on and the flight attendant came through and collected our glasses along with garbage.

Delta CRJ900 Arrival and Landing CVG

Delta CRJ900 First Class Landing CVG

We began our approach into CVG. The pilots came and told us that we’d be on the ground in about 20 minutes. Looks like we’re scheduled to land about 15 minutes early.

And on the ground here at CVG. This is a fun airport for cargo plane spotting, lots of 747s, 777s, and 767s in cargo trim.

Delta CRJ900 First Class Final Thoughts

I like the CRJ900, for being a regional jet, it’s very comfortable. Much better than the CRJ200 but not as nice as the ERJ175. In First Class, the 1-2 seating is great if you can get one of the single seats. I wasn’t that lucky today, but the 2 seat side is still very good. The seats are very comfortable, but there’s no in-seat entertainment. At least there’s wifi and power for devices.

The bulkhead seat has lots of leg room, more than the other seats, but there’s no space to store anything. The overhead was full so my backpack had to go in the closet. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind.

I’ll gladly ride on the Delta CRJ900 in first class anytime.
